My problem, then, seems to be in the architecture of the driver.

I know that this is a common driver issue for linux, and the answer is usually to install the manufacturer's driver instead of using the included open-source driver. The printer, however, is incredibly slow at putting out print jobs (5-30 minutes for a single page). The scanner is nice and prompt, using the SANE 'webscan' frontend. I currently have my Raspberry Pi running Rasbian, acting as a wireless printer/scanner server for a Canon Pixma MP610.
